Colored Veteran Dead

Galena Daily Gazette
3 January 1907

The remains of James Brooks, for the past several weeks an inmate of the county home, and who died at that place on Wednesday morning, were taken to East Dubuque last evening. Brooks is survived by a wife and one child. For several years he was a cook on Mississippi river boats, and in anti-bellum days he was a slave in Virginia. He prosessed (sic) considerable musical ability and was much in demand at dances in surrounding towns and villages.
