HARTFELDER // GROSZ * GROSS * GROSE............Earl Reep ...........July 1998
Hi Dori Thanks for your reply. I have been doing genealogical research on my grandmother`s grandparents Louis and Barbara (Hartfelder) Grosz who lived in Berreman Township, Jo Daviess County from about 1872 to the early 1890`s. From land/mortgage transaction records it appears that Louis Grosz probably died between 21 May 1885 and 26 September 1885 which means that he must have died in Berreman Township. Last month I found that Barbara went to Iowa in the early 1890`s with her oldest daughter so the only gravesite I am looking for is that of Louis. The name was sometimes spelled as Gross or Grose. What I would like to do is write to the sexton or other caretakers of the cemeteries in Berreman Township to see if I can find the gravesite and his birth and death dates. I do not have a very detailed map of that area, but from my atlas it does not appear that there are any towns in that area. It may be that they are pretty small. Any help in this matter is appreciated. ereep@whidbey.net

An early 1880 census shows a "Mamie" (7yrs.); a marriage is listed for Riley and Mary but I can't find out anything about them. SHERER // SHERER GARAGE...............Karen Wise.............Jan 1998
My grandfather was said to hail from Stockton IL. I have as yet to find any information that he did indeed come for IL. However I do know that in 1931 my father went to visit and is pictured in the attached photo. If we do discover that the Stockton on the truck turns out to be Stockton IL. and if the web site would like to show the picture, that would be acceptable. I am attaching the picture as a bmp file and hopefully you will be able to open it. Our family name (as you might guess) is SHERER. My fathers name is Edwin William Sherer b. 1929 in Oakland, CA. My Grandfathers name is the same and he was born in 1902 and migrated to CA and then to WA. We beleive that my ggrandfathers name was Herman, but we are unsure. My grandfather had a brother named Joeseph and a sister named Martha. They both migrated to CA. I quess I would like to ask if you might be able to check your phone books (if they go back that far) to see if the Sherer Garage was a actual place. If you have any other suggestions on how I might track down the Sherer Garage they would be greatly appreciated. From: Karen.Wise@clorox.com (Karen Wise)

BEDFORD // GAUSS // WENNER...............Eric Hartsfield ..........Jan 1998
My name is Eric Hartsfield (Hartsfeld@aol.com). I am doing research on the descendants of two immigrants who lived in Vinegar Hill Township, Section 33 (Rocky Road): Francis BEDFORD and Christiana Fredericka (GAUSS) (WENNER) SCHABER.
Francis BEDFORD was born in Harbury, Yorkshire about 1787. His first wife, Hannah, died 26 January 1829. They had three children: William Bedford (5 May 1822 - 6 October 1837) Thomas Bedford (2 May 1824 - ?) Ann (Bedford) WENNER (22 July 1826 - 14 May 1902) He married secondly, Elizabeth Roberts (died 10 November 1854), 29 October 1843, Jo Daviess County. John Samuel Bedford (6 August 1844 - 8 February 1857) Christiana Fredericka GAUSS was born in Waldrennach, Schwarzwald, Wuerttemburg 28 June 1795. Previous to her marriage to Ludwig Schaber she had two sons, four children in all: Johann Friderich GAUSS - 26 September 1817 Charles F. WENNER - 27 November 1819 Catherine Lucille (SCHABER) Eversoll - October 1829 Ludwig F. SCHABER - 22 October 1838
I am also interested in her nephew, Phillip Gauss and Fredericka Gauss (may be his sister). Phillip and Fredericka left Waldrennach together in 1854 and were both single. Were they siblings? Phillip is listed in the 1860 census for Vinegar Hill as Ludwig Schaber's nephew. Fredericka is no place to be found. Perhaps she married someone in Jo Daviess County between 1854 and 1860. (I havn't had a chance to check the marriage records yet). Phillip later moved to East Galena.

The inscription on the photograph states "From the James Art Gallery, Galena, Ill."
