Mrs. Mary Eustice Dodds Dies

Mrs. Mary Ellen Eustice Dodds of Galena died Thursday, Dec. 12 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. B. Dunham in Annapolis, Md.

She was born Feb. 7, 1882 on what is now the Charles Keller farm near Elizabeth. While the children were quite young the family moved to Galena and lived for a time on Seminary Hill before moving to 513 Park Avenue. She was married to Josiah Dodds Nov. 28, 1918.

She attended Galena Schools and then entered the School of Speech at Northwestern University from which she graduated in 1903, and was a post-graduate in 1904. For several summers she traveled on the Chautauqua circuit giving readings and training plays. She began serving as an occasional substitute in the Galena Public Library in 1941 and in the summer of 1948 attended the State University of Iowa to become a certified librarian. She served full time in the library until her retirement in 1971.

She was a life long member of the Galena United Methodist Church and taught its Sunday School for over forty years and was a supporter of many Galena organizations, the King's Daughters, Outlook Club and Historical Society.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. W. B. Dunham, Annapolis, Md., four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a nephew, Palmer Eustice of Galena and a niece, Mrs. R. W. Leach of Evanston, Ill.

Friends may call at the family home at 513 Park Avenue after 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. at the family home with the Rev. John Hodgson of First Presbyterian Church and the Rev. Robert Prater of United Methodist Church, conducting the service. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Galena Public Library or United Methodist Church of Galena.
