made a claim of his land and settled on it in 1838; it was purchased by his
father, Robert Campbell, of government in 1844; he was married in 1859 to Miss
Mary E. MacDonald, from Elizabeth Twp.; her father, John McDonald, served
through the Blackhawk War; they have six children: David H., Harriet A., Mary
E., Louisa J., Cora E., William E.; he has 245 acres of land in Derinda Twp and
120 acres of land in Hanover Twp.; he held the office of Justice of the Peace
four years; School Director ten years; his father died Feb. 11, 1862, at the
age of 71 years; his mother died Feb. 6, 1862, at the age of 67 years.

in 1847; he came to this country and Derinda Twp. in 1854; settled on his brother’s
farm in 1870; he was married in 1871, to Miss Annie M. Praeger, from Germany;
they have had four children: George Walter, born April 1, 1872; J. Bettie, Dec.
19, 1873; M. Clara, Aug. 8, 1874; L. Herman, July 29, 1877; his wife died Dec.
24, 1877; he holds the office of Twp. Clerk at the present time; he held the
office of Road Commissioner two years.
Dittmar, Gerhard - farmer and Justice of the
Peace; Sec. 10; P. O. Derinda Center; born in Germany in 1838, came to this
country and Michigan in 1854; came to this Co. in 1855; settled on his present
farm in 1865; he was married in 1865 to Miss Eva B. Fehler, from Germany; they
have five children: Annie M., born in 1867; Michael E., 1869; Emma M., 1871;
Minnie B., 1873; Caroline M., 1875; he has 200 acres of land. Mr. D. enlisted
in 1861, in Co. B, 45th Regt. I. V. I.; he was severely wounded in
the battles of Donelson and Shiloh. He was in Sherman’s campaign to the
Atlantic; mustered out in July 1865; he has held the office of Justice of the
peace for five years; Twp. Assessor 3 years; School Director 3 years. Mr. and
Mrs. Dittmar have been among the most active members of the M. E. German Church
since 1855.

Derinda; born in Germany, Dec. 6, 1836; came to this country and Co. with his
parents in 1855; they settled on their present farm, Feb. 17, 1855; his father,
George, Sr., who still lives with him, was born in Germany, Oct. 18, 1799; his
mother was born in Germany June 24, 1810; she died March 12, 1864; George, Jr.,
was married Dec. 24, 2865, to Miss Charity Thain, from Derinda Twp.; they have
had five children: John G., born April 11, 1867; Wm. A., Feb. 27,
1869;Fredoline A., March 16, 1871; Rudolph O., June 20, 1873; George F., Oct.
18, 1875; his wife died April 22, 1877; he has 280 acres of land in Sections 13
& 14; he has held office as School Director 9 years; Constable 4 years ;
Assessor 3 years.

children: Thomas, Sarah, Mary and John; Sarah died June 1876; John enlisted in
the 45th regt. I. V. I., and died of disease contracted while in the
army; Mary was married to Thomas Bradford of Marshalltown, Iowa; Thomas still
lives with his father. Mr. Ellinor’s wife is dead; he has 160 acres of land in
Sec. 8; has held the office of School Director six years.

the purchase of the land of the government, 1844; he was married, in 1848, to
Miss Eliza McCall, from Ireland; she was born Jan. 10, 1828; they have nine
children: James, born Feb. 15, 1849; Thomas, July 18, 1850; Elizabeth, Sept. 9,
1853; Daniel, Jr., June 16, 1855; Jane, Aug. 4, 1857, Samuel, April 25, 1859;
Martha A., Jan. 3, 1861; William J., Dec. 9, 1866; Joseph U., Nov. 18, 1870;
his niece, Agnes, lives with him; he has held the office of School Trustee 25
years, Assessor 1 year; he has 138 acres of land in Derinda Twp. and 240 acres
in Hanover Twp.

Hanover; born in Venango Co., Pennsylvania, June 18, 1834; he came to this
state and Carroll Co. with his father in 1837; they moved to Galena in 1839;
they came to Derinda Twp. in 1842; he left home to do for himself at the age of
fourteen; through his industry and economy he accumulated money and bought his
present farm, with gold, from the government in 1855; he was married in 1856 to
Margaret Wagman from Bucks Co., Pennsylvania; they had ten children, four are
dead: Mary E., born Oct. 16, 1859; Harriet T., Jan. 14, 1861; Ida E., Aug 12,
1862; Rebecca, Feb. 5, 1864; Lillie, April 8, 1869; and Cora E., Sept. 22,
1875; his father died in 1840 in Carroll Co.; he has 160 acres of land in Sec.
29; he enlisted in the 96th Regt. I. V. I., Co. a, in 1862; mustered
out in 1863 on account of sickness; re-enlisted April 1865; was mustered out
Jan. 27, 1866; he has held office of Assessor one year, Road Commissioner one
year. Mr. G. has been very prominent in the interests of his district school
and held the office of Director three years.

brothers, Hamilton and Robert, owns 430 acres of land - 230 acres in Derinda
Twp. and 200 acres in Hanover Twp.; Mr. K. has held the office of Road
Commissioner six years, School Director three years; his brothers came to this
country at the same time that he did.

married in 1861, to Miss Barbara A. Knapp, from Germany; she was born in 1843;
they have had eight children: William G., Caroline F., Rosa C., Frank A.,
Catherine O., Hattie E., Emma D., and Oscar. Mr. K. has 188 acres of land; he
has held the office of Township Collector 2 years, School Director 3 years, Commissioner
of highways 3 years.

farm in 1849; he was married in 1848 to Miss Elizabeth Claypool from Ohio; she
was born April 25, 1822; they have had six children: Helen R., born Feb. 12,
1850; James. P., Feb 1, 1852; Jesse R., Oct. 1, 1854; Louisa h., April 26,
1857; Evans B., Dec. 16, 1859; Cora A., Aug. 1, 1864; he has 760 acres of land
located in Sections 3, 4, and 10; 400 acres of his land he purchased of
government in 1844; he has held the office of Supervisor for the past nine
years, School Director eight years, School Trustee eighteen years. Mr. Logan is
quite extensively engaged in stock raising; his cattle and horses all look fine.

Pennsylvania; they have had five children: Jane E., born April 23, 1858;
Charles m., Feb. 15, 1863; Willmer W., Jan 1870; Bennie R. May 17, 1873; Mary
E., Jan. 31, 1868, died Oct. 8, 1868. Mr. g. was elected Constable when the
Twp. was first organized in 1854, he held it four years; Township Constable one
year, Postmaster since Jan. 27, 1873; he has 100 acres of land in Sections 9
and 11.

served five years in the British army; he came to this country and Co. in 1833;

Seyler, Rev. Theodore - clergyman, German Lutheran Church; Sec. 16; P. O. Derinda Center; born in Bavaria, Germany, June 6, 1839; came to this country and Dubuque in 1854; he pursued his studies for the ministry in the Whatburg [sic] German Seminary, Clayton Co., Iowa, until 1859; he spent three years among the Indians as a missionary; he returned and finished his course in 1864; he commenced his ministry at Newbern, Jasper Co., Iowa, in 1865, where he remained three years; he spent three years and six months in Wisconsin; settled over his present parish in 1871; he was married in 1865 to Miss Mary Mance, from Des Moines, Iowa; they have had seven children, two died; names of living: Charlotte, Magdalena, Gotthold, Theodore, Jr., and Frederick. Mr. Seyler has two appointments besides the two regular; Rev. A. Myers assists him. The two churches in Derinda Twp., over which he is pastor, were organized as one in 1855, under the ministry of Rev. S. Fritschel. In 1849 [1859?] there was a division made through the forms of worship; a part withdrew and built a church, in 1859, in Sec. 27; they now have a membership of 20 families. The church in Sec. 16 has a fine church built in 1872, with a membership of 28 families.
