This information was taken from a copy of the burial records of the Greenwood Cemetery Association, which was copied and indexed in 1973, by Alice Lawrason Barthell. The burials in the index begin 30 March, 1853, and end in July, 1859. Records were poorly kept, or not kept at all. Some of those interred in the Old Cemetery were later moved to the New City Cemetery, now known as Greenwood. Many graves never had any markers, and the location of the burial was indicated as being so many feet from a known stone, tree, or fence. Of course many of these landmarks have long since disappeared and are not included in this current record. At one time many of the broken stones were removed and placed in storage. Some of them have been returned to the cemetery and placed flat in the ground, anchored in concrete.
When the old ledger was begun in 1853 there were already many burials in the cemetery that were not in the records. There are names in the ledger with no identification of the location. They appeared only as a reference point for the burials after March, 1853. Some of those names are included here, with notation of 'no information'. Any dates that occur prior to the time the record-keeping began have been taken from the tombstones and monuments that are still standing in the cemetery. These dates are the actual date of death, rather than the burial date that is in the 1853 index. Names that are marked with an asterisk (*) have photos of the stones uploaded to the Find A Grave website. For the most part, names and the cause of death have been recorded as they were in the original records.
