I am trying to find more information for my family members who lived in Jo Davies County, Galena Illinios. I read a query about a man killied in a train wreck in 1903 possibly February. It may or may not be the same incident as the year is off but my Great Grandfather James William KIRK worked for the railroad in Galena and was killed by a train on Feb 13th or 14th 1904. His wife Elizabeth HUBACHER Kirk was so upset by the death of her husband she went into labor and my Grandfather James William KIRK was born three days later. His birth was on February 16th 1904. So I am guessing the accident was on the 13th. After that Elizabeth was alone with her two sons Emmett and James Kirk and later in life she married a man named Martin Charles MCMANUS and they lived the rest of their lives in Galena except for a period spent in Dubuque. My Grandfather was Francis Joseph McKERNAN b 2 Oct 1898 at Vinegar Hill, JoDaviess Co. Il to William Raymond McKERNAN & Catherine DUGGAN McKERNAN. William's parents where John McKERMAM & Bridget FLINN McKERNAN. I know very little of the McKERNAN family history and hope you will be able to give me a hand with my research. My Grandfather died in his 40's of cancer in Wayne County, MI and my Grandmother Eileen Catherine DOLLARD McKERNAN knew very little about the McKERNAN family. The Galena Daily Gazette, Galena, Illinois, Monday evening, February 15, 1904, page 3 The remains of the late James KIRK, who was instantly killed through being struck by a Nortwestern passenger train in CHicago on Friday, arrived in this city on the 8:34 Central passenger train, on Saturday evening, accompanied by his brother-in-law, Nicholas HUBACHER, Jr. The body of the unfortunate young man was at once removed from the depot to his residence on Main street from whence the funeral was held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon to St. Mary's Catholic church were services were conducted by Rev. William Baily. There was a large attendance at the church, evidencing the esteem and respect in which the departed was held in the community where nearly all of his brief life was spent. Besides his brother-in-law above mentioned the remains were accompanied here by John BYRNE, Robert FRAZER, John FEELEY and Henry MELOY, members of the Northwestern bridge crew with which Mr. KIRK was employed at the time of his death. A number of the railroad and bridgemen arrived here this mo! rning from Milwaukee and other points to attend the funeral. At the conclusion of the services at the church the remains were conveyed to the German Catholic cemetery in West Galena where interment was made. Mr. KIRK was born in this city nearly twenty-nine yhears ago and spent the greater portion of his life here. He was always known as an honest, industrious, upright young man and was respected by everyone who knew him. For some time he had been employed on the Northwestern road as a bridge carpenter and was laboring in that capacity in one of the suburbs of Chicago at the time of his demise. He was in the act of unloading tools from a handcar to the regular tool car, standing on a sidetrack when a passenger train approached at a high rate of speed and he hastily stepped from the track on which it was coming to an adjoing track. Unfortunately another passenger train was approaching from an opposite direction on the track, whiche he failed to notice. The engine struck him with great force and he was carried a distance of about 75 feet before he was thrown to the side of the track in a badly mangled condition and devoid of life. The result of the coroner's inquest has not been learned. The Galena Daily Gazeete, Saturday evening, Feb. 13, 1904, page 3. Relative to the death of James KIRK, mention of which was made in the columns, last evening, the Chicago Chronicle of this morning contained the following. "While at work upon the railroad tracks of the CHicago and Northwestern railroad at Ingraham street, James KIRK, 28 years old, or Galena, Ill., was struck and instantly killed by a north bound passenger train. The man was living at 190 Clybourn place." Nothing more concerning the accident have been learned here. Nicholas HUBACHER Jr., brother-in-law of the deceased, went to Chicago over the Central last night to be present at the inquest, which was held this forenoon. He will accompany the remains to Galena this evening on the 8:34 Central train and will be taken to his residence on Main street, from whence the funeral will be held at a date not yet designated. The sad news of Mr. Kirk's death came as a profound shock to his many friends and his young wife was almost prostrated when informed of the terrible misfortune that had befallen her.

Thanks to Marjorie for posting the information about my great grandfathers death. She just happened to have that particular microfilm and responded within one day. We'd always thought his death had taken place in Galena and did not know all the facts. It's nice when people who are in that area or have the resources help out those of us who are distant. I live in Alaska and it's not easy doing research from here. Jo Davies County has one of the best research sites I've seen and a rich interesting history.

I am searching for more information on John Thomas and wife Margaret STAHM of Jo Daviess County. According to my information, John Thomas and Margaret STAHM lived in Jo Daviess County and had at least one daughter, Elizabeth Nicole THOMAS. Elizabeth N. THOMAS married Loren Anderson BROOKS 31 May 1851 in East Forks, Jo Daviess County, IL. They later moved to St. Croix County, Wisconsin and settled 100 acres of land that Loren bought around 1855. After serving in the Wisconsin 13th Regiment during the Civil War, Loren recieved land under the Homestead Act and moved to Minnesota. The BROOKS family settled in the town of Renville in Renville County, MN. Their son, Jesse Thomas BROOKS, is my 2nd great grandfather. Any information on any of the above persons would be greatly appreciated. I currently know nothing of the THOMAS and STAHM families but have a lot of information on the Brooks family that goes back to 1750 in Connecticut.
