GINKINS, HUGHES posted by Ann Montgomery on Sunday, August 8, 1999

I believe that your John Hughes and My Hughes are not related unless they came over at different times and was a cousin. My Richard Hughes and Mary Ginkins came from Anglesey, Wales around 1842 and had two children in Wisconsin before settling in Jo Daviess County. There are no John,Sarah, or Elizabeth in any of my lines. My Hugh Richard and Owen were born in Anglesey and yes, I knew about their serving in the Civil War. If you ever can connect our two lines, please write back. I am planning to do some Wales civil registration research in the near future so I will keep you in mind. Ann.

MCPHILLIPS posted by Lori Miller on Sunday, August 8, 1999

Hi Jodi - my gggrandfather was Felix McPhillips who lived in Jo Daviess County. He was born in 1802 and died 7/1/1846. He married Elizabeth ? who died 11/9/1862. Thye had the following children: Elizabeth, unknown girl, Peter, Mary, Felix and Margaret. I don't see a connection yet but I will let you know if I find one. Good luck. Lori.

MCCORMICK, MCPHILLIPS, SPEER posted by Jodi McPhillips on Sunday, August 8, 1999

Hi Lori, Thanks for the quick response. I am curious which of Felix and Elizabeth MCPHILLIPS' children you descend from? I saw their tombstones in St Michael's Cemetery in Galena, and it appears as if the two boys and their Mom died around the same time in 1862. Do you know what happened to daughters, Elizabeth, and Mary? From the 1850 Census there is a daughter Jane listed (I think she married Peter MCCORMICK from Elizabeth, IL--they had 10 kids) but I never saw a Margaret. Okay, here is my theory because I can't find out whom I descend from--In the 1850 Census, a William Speer was listed in the same household as Elizabeth and her kids. In the 1860 Census a Thomas SPEER was listed as Elizabeth's grandson. I wonder if Thomas changed his name after those many deaths in 1862, to MCPHILLIPS and I descend from him. Because I know my ancestor was born in Irish Hollow and there was never a Thomas SPEER listed later, but a Thomas MCPHILLIPS with the same information (dates etc.) I know that Th! omas Peter MCPHILLIPS was my gggrandfather. Yes it appears it may be a nonmarital child who is my ancestor. It is a bit frustrating to get so far and not be able to get passed the MCPHILLIPS' of Irish Hollow with out knowing whom is my ancestor. If you have any information about it I would appreciate if you would let me know OR if you have any suggestions as to my next step. Thanks a lot for all of your help. Jodi

MCPHILLIPS posted by Lori Miller on Sunday, August 8, 1999

Jodi, I really don't have much more information at this time. Felix and Elizabeth's daughter Mary is my gggrandmother (Elizabeth is my ggggrandmother). Mary married James Powers 6/20/1865. I have lots of information on her descendants. Daughter Elizabeth 1837-1881 married McCabe and Margaret 1847-1876 I am told married another Power. Have you been to the Galena Library? They have an excellent history center with obituaries, old newspapers, etc. I don't know if they have anything back that far. There is also a Powers/McPhillips Family Bible. I will write the person who has it for more information for you. I will let you know when I find out anything else. Lori.

Thanks Lori for all the inforomation that you shared. I really appreciated it and it gives me food for thought. Also, thanks for the hint about the Galena Library. We did stop there but for only a little bit before it closed. Thanks again, and we'll let you know if we find anything more on this end. Jodi.

GALLAHER, MURRAY, ROGERS, WARDELL posted by Judi Gilker on Sunday, August 8, 1999

I am researching the Families of GALLAHER and MURRAY and I believe they could have lived in Jo Daviess Co. IL or had family there. Also looking for John M. WARDELL or John M. ROGERS who could have lived there. He probably worked for the railroad. In 1862 he married Elizabeth Caroline GALLAHER. Patrick Gallaher who was born on St.Patty's Day, March of 1825 in Dublin Ireland.(not proven yet) He shows up in Rock Island Illinois in 1844. He is marrying Elizabeth Murray on August 8, 1844. His father has to sign for him, for he is under age. His fathers name is John Gallaher from Warsaw, Hancock Co. IL. I have no idea what Patrick's mothers name is other then to give the names of his children. I do know the name of his new brides mother and it is Miranda Murray (Living in Rock Island, IL) for she had to sign for her because she was but 16 years of age. This is the family: Patrick Gallaher b. March 1825 Elizabeth (Murray) Gallaher b. 1828 James b. 1845 Elizabeth Caroline b. November, 1847 (my GGgrandmother) William b. 1853 Michael b. 1855 Clara Anne b. 1857 Warsaw, Hancock Co. in 1844 it is very likely that it is Gallahers.

EINSTEIN, THODE posted by susan thode on Sunday, August 8, 1999

Marie EINSTEIN married John Jacob THODE in Germany and had children--Edward, August, Henry, Carl, Katherine, Caroline, and Doris. Any hint of where Marie came from in Jo Daviess records? She was born @ 1803 according to family stories. John Jacob died in Germany. August came to Galena and brother Edward joined him later. Henry stayed in NY state (anyone have an idea where?), Carl died in Germany. Don't know about the girls. Marie and John J. may have been from near Otterndorf, S-H, Germany..as August is said to have been born in Otterndorf, and Edward in Hadein, Otterndorf. I think this is somewhere near the current Danish-German border. Any info on Marie, John Jacob, or rest of famiy wold be helpful.

MCCABE, MCPHILLIPS posted by Jodi McPhillips on Sunday, August 8, 1999

Hi Lori, Your information about the MCPHILLIPS girl marrying a MCCABE may prove the best lead we have had yet. In the 1870 Census of Jo Daviess County, Thomas MCPHILLIPS was a farm hand for James and Elizabeth MCCABE. That is where we can trace him so far, if he is the Thomas Peter that is my gggrandfather, well, that is where we'll have to try to get more proof. I can't thank you enough for the help. What you probably thought was just a nugget of information, may be the biggest key for me. I am so lucky you responded to my query. Thanks again, Jodi.
